We're excited to announce updates to the Taxonomy API that expand its coverage and improve its flexibility.
New Taxonomies Available
Philanthropy Classification System (PCS) Version 3
PCS v3 is now available in the Taxonomy API with full search and lookup support. This latest version of Candid's comprehensive taxonomy for classifying philanthropic activities provides enhanced granularity and updated classifications to better reflect the evolving landscape of philanthropic giving. Developers can now access PCS v3 codes, descriptions, and hierarchical relationships through both search and direct lookup endpoints.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Taxonomy API now includes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals taxonomy , enabling developers to map philanthropic activities to global development priorities. SDG records include:
- Goal number (1-17)
- Standardized SDG code (e.g., "SDG8")
- Goal name (e.g., "Decent Work and Economic Growth")
- Full goal description
This addition supports alignment between philanthropic efforts and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development .
Enhanced Lookup Functionality
We've expanded direct lookup capabilities across existing taxonomies, making search terms optional parameters. The following taxonomies now support both search and lookup operations:
- NTEE Major Categories
- NTEE Minor Categories
- Filing Types
- MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) Codes
- Subsection Codes
- Foundation Types
This enhancement provides developers with more flexible integration options. Use search when exploring taxonomies and direct lookup to initially populate your database or when you already have specific codes.
